During 2009,
Axis Communications, global leader of network cameras and
Anixter’s strategic partner obtained a
market share in the sale of IP network cameras three times bigger than its nearest competitor in the Latin American region. Data was extracted from a recently published survey conducted by IMS Research, leading independent provider of market research and consultancy to the global electronics industry. The survey, entitled “The Latin American Market for videosurveillance and CFTV equipment”, shows how Axis has captured 30.6 percent of the segment, whereas the second competitor got only 10.1% during 2009.
In this report, Axis also holds first place in the video encoders market (equipment converting analog video signals into digital signals), a segment in which it captures a 23.6 percent market share. When the network videosurveillance market is analyzed as a whole –combining network cameras, video encoders, video management software, and digital video recorders-, Axis is again on top, in this case with 21.2 percent in a market that made profits for US$ 74.3 millions in 2009.
“Inspite of of the current prevail of analog video within the videosurveillance equipment market, it is estimated that participation will substantially decrease in the analyzed period”, states the report. Axis Communications’ year-to-year growth reflects a global trend towards digitization of all videosurveillance systems –an even more evident phenomenon in the Latin American region. According to IMS Research, the analog security camera market will achieve a combined annual growth revenue (CAGR) of only 1.3 percent between 2009 and 2014, in Latin America.
On the other hand, the forecast is that the network security camera market will get a combined annual growth revenue of 39.2% over the same period. It is estimated that in 2014, over 70 percent of revenues for security cameras will be generated by IP cameras –an inccreased advance quicker than expected for the developed countries, such as the United States.
“These positive results for Axis in Latin America come to prove the local market recognition thanks to the excellence of our products, and more than anything else, they reflect our respect and cooperation relationship across the countries”, said Alessandra Faria, Axis Regional Director for South America. “The record in the number of projects is based on the experience Axis has been able to incorporate over the last three decades in the network arena. This reinforces our commitment to improving the segment standards and building new alliances”, she also said.
Urban Videosurveillance
The driving forces behind this trend were also disclosed in the survey developed by IMS Research. The main forces are: the current transition from analog monitoring systems towards fully digital systems; greater demand of intelligent video analysis technologies; growing substitution of monochromatic, standard resolution cameras by color, high-definition megapixel cameras, and preference for day/night functions and improved image compression standards (such as MPEG-4 and H.264). Likewise, a great deal of new projects have demanded open source network videosurveillance equipment, such as ONVIF, as well as integration with access control and other technologies.
The urban videosurveillance market alone, in Latin America, will get to close to US$ 100 million in 2014. The sale of network videosurveillance equipment for this end application will grow at an average rate of 40.5 percent between 2009 and 2014 –the highest among all 17 verticals markets under analysis.
The Latin American performance, above the global average, is being driven especially by Brazil, the largest and fastest growing market in all Latin America, according to the survey. Infrastructure projects, two major sports events and a changing economic environment will mark an unprecedented number of videosurveillance projects, as forecast by IMS research. Other countries with a substantial growth potential in the videosurveillance market are Argentina, Mexico and Colombia.
Investment in videosurveillance equipment, in Latin America, is mainly originated in large-scale infrastructure development projects -roads, airports, urban development and railways. According to the IMS research study, “the biggets growing sector is Sports and Leisure, with an average growth of around 25.3 percent between 2009 and 2014, which is estimated to get to US$ 44.1 million for the World Cup in Brazil –a slightly higher value than that predicted for investment in airports, also in 2014.
